The latest superhero-themed film – “Birdman” – will be released this autumn, according to Fox Searchlight. The film is directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu [“Biutiful”] and is not the typical superhero fare. Instead, Michael Keaton plays an actor who has gained fame playing an iconic superhero but then struggles to start a Broadway play. The film also stars Zach Galifianakis, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts.
“Birdman” is not directly based on the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon character created by Alex Toth for the cartoon series “Birdman and the Galaxy Trio” which ran from 1967-69. Nor is it directly based on the subsequent Adult Swim cartoon resurrection as “Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law”, which ran from 2000-07 [though all Hanna Barbera and Williams Street people involved in both shows may be intrigued by some of the film’s similarities with the cartoon character in both cases].
“Birdman” is currently scheduled to be released on October 17, 2014.
